Pattaya has countless places to eat, from local Thai restaurants to international food. One dining experience worth knowing about is Mookata — a Thai-style BBQ and hotpot enjoyed around the same table.

Mookata may not get as much attention in typical tourist guides as some of Thailand’s better-known dishes, but it is widely enjoyed by Thai people and offers a fun, filling meal at a reasonable price. It’s one of the Thai dining experiences I think travelers should know about when visiting Pattaya.

So, what exactly is Mookata, and how does it work? This guide explains what Mookata is, how the grill and hotpot work, what you can eat, how buffet pricing works, and what to know before trying it in Pattaya.

🍲 What Is Mookata?

Mookata is a Thai-style BBQ and hotpot combined in a single pan.
The easiest way to understand it is to look at the Mookata pan:

🔥 Raised dome: The center is used for grilling, especially meat such as pork.

🍲 Outer section: The surrounding area holds a broth, where you can cook vegetables, noodles, mushrooms, seafood, and other ingredients.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Shared at the table: Everyone can grill and cook together around the same pan.

You may see slightly different pan designs from one Mookata place to another, but the basic idea remains the same: grill in the center and cook in the broth around it.

🔥 How to Eat Mookata (Step-by-Step)

The restaurant provides prepared broth for the outer section of the Mookata pan. Additional broth is kept in a container on the table.

Trying Mookata for the first time? The process is easier than it may look. Once you understand the basic steps, you can simply choose your food, grill, cook, and enjoy.

STEP
Choose Your Table & Get Started

Choose an available table and let a staff member know you’re ready to order.

STEP
Choose Your Buffet & Order Drinks

Choose the buffet plan you want. A basic plan usually focuses on meat and standard buffet items, while some Mookata places offer a seafood option with additional choices such as prawns.

The plan you choose determines which ingredients are included and, at some places, may also affect the cooking setup.

💡 Note: Drinks are usually charged separately, so check the drink menu when you order.

STEP
Add the Broth

Add broth to the outer section of the Mookata pan. This is where you will cook vegetables, noodles, mushrooms, and other ingredients.

STEP
Pick Your Ingredients

Head to the buffet area and choose the ingredients included in your plan. Bring them back to your table and refill as you go.

STEP
Grill and Cook at the Same Time

Put meat on the raised center dome to grill, and cook vegetables, noodles, and other ingredients in the outer broth section.

STEP
Refill and Enjoy

Go back to the buffet whenever you want more ingredients. Combine grilled items with your favorite dipping sauces and enjoy your meal at your own pace.

🥩 What Can You Eat at a Mookata Buffet?

A typical Mookata buffet includes meat, seafood, vegetables, noodles, dipping sauces, and sometimes Som Tam. Here’s what you may find:

🥩 Meat

Pork is usually one of the main choices at a Mookata buffet. Depending on the place, you may also find beef, chicken, and different marinated meats.

This buffet section includes items such as pork belly, marinated pork, pork liver, and pork fat.

🦐 Seafood

Seafood can be another important part of the buffet, especially at restaurants offering a seafood option. You may find prawns, crab, squid, mussels, and other seafood, depending on the restaurant and what is available that day.

🥬 Vegetables, Mushrooms & Noodles

You’ll also find a variety of vegetables, mushrooms, and noodles. These are mainly used in the broth around the Mookata pan, but you can choose what you like and combine them with the grilled meats.

🌶️ Dipping Sauces & Som Tam

Mookata is not only about grilling meat. Dipping sauces are an important part of the meal, and some buffets also offer a DIY Som Tam station.

At some places, you can make your own Som Tam by adjusting the chili, lime, and other ingredients to your taste.

🥤 Drinks: Basic non-alcoholic drinks are often included with the buffet, while alcoholic drinks such as beer are usually charged separately.

🍳 How the Mookata Pan Works (Cooking Basics)

The Mookata pan is designed so that fat and juices from the meat can flow into the broth, adding flavor as you cook.

🔥 1. Start with the Center Dome
A common way to start is by placing a little pork fat on the raised center dome. As it heats up, the fat can help prevent the meat from sticking and adds flavor as you begin grilling.

🍲 2. Fill the Outer Section with Broth
The outer section is filled with broth, where you can cook vegetables, mushrooms, noodles, and other ingredients.

Mookata in action: grilling meats and simmering vegetables simultaneously for maximum flavor.

🥩 3. Grill and Cook at the Same Time
Place your meat on the raised center dome while the other ingredients cook in the broth around it. This is the basic idea behind Mookata: grill and hotpot at the same time using one pan.

✨ 4. Let the Flavors Come Together
As the meat cooks, some of the fat and juices can run down into the broth. This adds extra flavor to the soup and is one of the fun parts of cooking Mookata this way.

💰 How Much Does Mookata Cost in Pattaya?

Based on the Mookata places I’ve visited in Pattaya, basic meat-focused options cost around 169–229 THB, while seafood options or upgrades are around 249–400 THB.

Many Mookata places start with a basic buffet focused on meat and standard buffet items. A seafood upgrade then adds a wider selection of seafood to the same meal. In many cases, an additional wire grill is also provided for grilling the seafood.

Seafood Upgrade: 249–400 THB per person
The basic buffet plus a wider selection of seafood.

Children’s Pricing: Often based on height or age, and the rules vary by place.

Drinks: Basic non-alcoholic drinks are often included with the buffet, while beer and other alcoholic drinks are usually charged separately.

Extra Charcoal: Around 20 THB per refill at some places.

🍺 Beer: Around 65–80 THB for common brands such as Chang, Leo, and Singha.

When a Mookata place uses an upgrade system, the seafood price is the total price for the upgraded buffet, not a seafood-only meal. You still get the basic meat selection along with the seafood.

Not every Mookata place uses this system. Some offer one all-inclusive price covering both meat and seafood, so always check what is included before ordering.

💡 What Should You Know Before Trying Mookata?

Before you try Mookata, here are a few practical tips that will help you enjoy the meal without any surprises.

🍽️ Use the Buffet Containers Correctly

Mookata buffets often provide larger trays for vegetables. Please don’t use these trays to carry meat or seafood to your table. Some places may charge a fine if you do.

Larger trays are commonly used for vegetables, while other ingredients are often placed on smaller plates.

🥢 Keep Raw and Cooked Utensils Separate

Mookata involves handling raw meat and seafood at the table, so it’s important to keep your cooking utensils separate from your eating chopsticks. Use the tongs or other utensils provided for handling raw ingredients, and use your chopsticks for cooked food.

🌶️ Don’t Judge the Sauce by Its Color

Most Mookata places offer at least three different dipping sauces. Don’t assume a sauce is spicy just because it looks red. When trying them for the first time, take a small amount of each sauce and see which one you like.

🌡️ Expect Some Heat and Smoke

Grilling at the table means you can expect heat, smoke, and strong food smells. Choose your table with airflow in mind, and wear clothes you don’t mind getting a little smoky.

🦟 Bring Insect Repellent for Outdoor Dining

Many Mookata places have outdoor seating, so insect repellent can be useful, especially in the evening.

🍲 Keep an Eye on the Broth

The broth can run low fairly quickly while you are cooking. Staff may notice and add more, but you can also ask for a refill or add more yourself when extra broth is provided at the table.

⏰ Take Your Time

In my experience, there is usually no need to rush your Mookata meal. Take your time, go back for more food, and enjoy the meal at a comfortable pace while following the restaurant’s rules.

💁 Tipping Is Not Usually Expected

Mookata is largely self-service, so tipping is not usually expected for the basic service. However, if the staff go out of their way to help—such as opening shells, clearing plates frequently, finding specific ingredients, or adjusting a fan for your table—you may choose to leave a small tip as a personal thank-you.
