Arriving in Pattaya can be exciting—but also a bit overwhelming when you need to buy daily essentials right away.

If you want a simple and stress-free start, Big C Place Pattaya Klang (widely known as Big C Extra) is one of the most practical places to shop on your first day.

Located in the heart of Central Pattaya, this shopping complex lets you buy everything you need in one stop—from bottled water and snacks to toiletries and small appliances.

💡 Good to Know: The store was recently renovated and officially renamed from Big C Extra to Big C Place Pattaya Klang. Many websites, maps, and local residents still use the old name, so don’t be confused—they’re the same place.

🏬 Location & How to Get There

Big C Place Pattaya Klang is located just inland from Pattaya Beach Road, making it easy to reach from most central hotels and tourist areas.

Big C Place Pattaya Klang (formerly Big C Extra) is located in Central Pattaya, just a short distance from Pattaya Beach and Tree Town(Not to scale. Please use this map as a general guide)

After checking into your hotel, getting here is quick and simple. Depending on where you stay, you have a few ways to visit:

• 🚶 Walking – Best if your hotel is nearby. Avoid walking long distances in the Pattaya heat, especially when carrying heavy shopping bags on the way back.
• 🚕 Ride-Hailing Apps (Bolt / Grab) – The most convenient and stress-free option for first-time visitors, especially when heading back with heavy groceries.
• 🛻 Songthaew (Baht Bus) – An inexpensive way to travel around Pattaya. However, the nearest regular Songthaew route is along Soi Buakhao, so you’ll need to walk about 5 minutes to reach Big C Place.

Local Friend

Thanks to its recent renovation, the shopping complex feels brighter, more modern, and offers even more dining and shopping options—making your first shopping trip even more enjoyable.

🥩 Fresh Food Section – Useful Even from Day One

Fresh meat, seafood, and local ingredients are available every day.

The fresh food section at Big C Place Pattaya Klang is well stocked with fresh local ingredients.

You’ll find a wide variety of options, including:

Fresh seafood.

Local Thai vegetables.

Ready-to-eat and ready-to-cook meals.

Most fresh meat and vegetables are sold by weight rather than in pre-packed portions, allowing you to buy exactly what you need for a single meal.

If you’re staying somewhere with cooking facilities, you can even buy ingredients to enjoy a home-style Mookata (Thai BBQ).

Even if you don’t plan to cook every day, it’s a great place to pick up fresh fruit, salads, or ready-to-eat meals for an easy breakfast or light dinner.

The renovated grocery section is bright, spacious, and easy to navigate, making first-day shopping simple.

On my first visit after arrival, I like to keep things simple. After checking into my hotel or condo, I usually buy only what I need for a comfortable first two or three days.

I don’t try to buy everything on my first visit. After settling into my hotel, I usually have a much better idea of what I actually need. You can buy groceries, enjoy a meal, exchange money, use banking services, relax with a massage, and pick up anything you forgot—all without having to travel between multiple locations.

💡 Visiting Tips for First-Time Travelers

To make your very first supermarket run completely seamless, keep these practical tips in mind:

🛍 Bring an Eco-Bag: Like most major supermarkets in Thailand, Big C does not provide free plastic shopping bags. Bring your own, or be prepared to buy a reusable bag at the checkout.

🏨 Keep Your Hotel Name Ready: Have your hotel name or location saved on your phone. It makes booking a Bolt ride back much easier.

💵 Keep Small Change Handy: While credit cards are widely accepted at the main cash registers, having small cash bills (20, 50, or 100 THB) is useful for the food court or quick snacks outside.

⏰ Avoid Peak Evening Hours: The store becomes much busier between 6 PM and 8 PM, when local residents stop by after work. Morning or early afternoon is usually much more relaxed.

🏁 Final Thoughts – Is It Worth Visiting on Your First Day?

If you want to get settled in quickly and without stress after arriving in Pattaya, Big C Place Pattaya Klang is easily one of the most practical stops you can make.

Hey there! Planning to hop on a songthaew in Pattaya?

For the first time in over 30 years, Pattaya’s iconic transport fare system has changed. As of April 10, 2026, the old 10 THB flat rate is officially history.

Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a returning traveler who hasn’t been to Pattaya in years, this article is for you. In this guide, I’ll explain the new fare system, show you where the official fare boundaries are, and share what actually happens on the road based on my recent rides around Pattaya.

Local Friend

Don’t worry—while there are official zones, almost every ride on the main tourist routes will cost just 15 THB!

💡 Want to Learn the Routes and How to Ride Too? If you also need help with specific routes, where the songthaews go, or the basic rules of how to wave one down and pay, check out my other guide: Pattaya Songthaew Guide 2026: Routes, Fares, and How to Ride. It covers all the basics you need for a smooth trip!

1. Quick Guide: The New 15 THB Standard

The most important update is that the base fare has moved from 10 THB to 15 THB. For most travelers, this is the only number you need to remember.

15 THB: The standard fare for almost all tourist routes, main beach-area circuits, and short trips within the city.

20 THB: Only applies to long-distance rides that head far outside the main tourist areas (such as deep into Na Jomtien).

2. Official Fare Zone Map & Reality Check

Pattaya Songthaew Fare Map: The official boundaries vs. real-world operation.

Officially, the city is split into separate fare zones. According to the regulations, crossing between certain zones (like moving past Dolphin Circle into Naklua) should trigger a 20 THB fare.

✨ Real Ride Report

During multiple rides between Central Pattaya and Naklua in May 2026, most drivers still accepted 15 THB when crossing Dolphin Circle. Because the fare revision is still relatively new, real-world practices may continue to evolve over time.

3. Typical Route Examples: How Much Do I Pay?

To help you visualize your trips, here are the most common routes tourists take and the actual fares to expect on the ground:

Route

Fare

Details / Reality Check

📍 Terminal 21 ➔ Central Festival

15 THB

Any standard ride along Beach Road or Second Road within the main city center routes is a flat 15 THB.

📍 Dolphin Circle ➔ Lan Pho Naklua Market
(Naklua)

15 THB

Though officially a zone boundary, most drivers on the standard Naklua route currently accept 15 THB.

📍 South Pattaya Songthaew Stand ➔ Jomtien Beach

15 THB

Heading from the southern hub down to the main Jomtien Beach road area costs 15 THB.

📍 Jomtien Beach ➔ Na Jomtien
(Past Thanon Chaiyapruek)

20 THB

If you travel far south past the Chaiyapruek Intersection, the fare correctly steps up to 20 THB.

Common Tourist Routes & Fares

4. Why Pattaya Increased Songthaew Fares After 30 Years

So, what caused this historic change after decades of the iconic 10 THB flat rate?

The Pattaya Songthaew Operators Cooperative officially revised the pricing structure in April 2026. The decision was driven by the continuous rise in fuel prices, vehicle maintenance costs, and the overall cost of living in Thailand. This essential step ensures the sustainability of local transport, allowing drivers to cover their daily expenses while keeping the city’s most popular transit system running smoothly.

5. Common Fare Mistakes Tourists Make

To avoid awkward moments or paying too much, keep these common beginner mistakes in mind before your first ride:

Paying Before Getting Off: Never try to pay the driver while boarding or while the vehicle is moving. Simply ride to your destination, press the buzzer to stop, get off the back of the truck, and then walk up to the front passenger window to hand over your fare.

Giving a 1,000 THB Note: Handing the driver a large 500 or 1,000 THB bill for a 15 THB ride can cause major issues, as drivers carry limited change. Always prepare smaller coins (a 10 THB and a 5 THB coin) or small 20 THB notes in advance.

Mistaking a Chartered Songthaew for a Shared Ride: If a songthaew is parked empty on the side of the road and the driver asks, “Where do you want to go?”, they are offering a private charter (taxi service), which can cost 100–200 THB or more. To pay the regular 15 THB shared rate, only hop onto trucks that are already moving or have other passengers sitting in the back.

6. Final Thoughts: Simple, Affordable Transit

At the end of the day, you don’t need to stress over complex maps or exact zone boundaries. Just remember that the general price has moved from 10 THB to 15 THB for almost everywhere you will go as a visitor.

Because the 2026 fare system is still relatively new, local operations can occasionally adapt, and slight variations might happen. If you ever find yourself on a much longer ride and feel unsure about the exact boundary, handing the driver 20 THB is a safe, polite, and stress-free way to keep your journey moving smoothly. Enjoy the ocean breeze and have a fantastic time exploring Pattaya!

In my experience, most rides around Pattaya’s main tourist areas still feel just as simple as before. Since 15 THB coins don’t exist, the easiest way to pay is by handing over a 20 THB note and grabbing your 5 THB change, or simply carrying a 5 THB coin along with your 10 THB coin.

🚨 Quick update: The 10-baht era has officially ended!

After keeping the same prices for decades, Pattaya songthaew fares were officially updated in April 2026. It’s still an amazing deal, but here’s the new breakdown:

• 15 THB : Within Pattaya city center (Beach Road, Second Road, Soi Buakhao).
(Tip: Since 15-baht coins don’t exist, pay with a 10-baht and a 5-baht coin!)

• 20 THB : Longer routes traveling to Jomtien or Naklua areas.

🚌 Pattaya’s Songthaews: 4 Things You Should Know First

Before riding a songthaew in Pattaya, there are four key points that will help you avoid confusion and ride like a local.

Songthaews run on fixed main routes — but stops are flexible.

The standard fare is 15 THB on main routes (updated in April 2026).

You must signal to get on and off.

When Does a Songthaew Become a private taxi?

❶ Songthaews Run on Fixed Main Routes (Flexible Stops)

In Pattaya, songthaews follow main roads but do not use fixed bus stops. You can get on or off almost anywhere along the route by simply signaling the driver. Once you get used to this, you’ll find it one of the easiest ways to get around Pattaya.

❷ The standard Fare is 15 THB on Main Routes

As long as you stay within the regular main routes, the standard fare is 15 THB per ride. You do not need to negotiate. Just get on, ride, and pay when you get off. Extra charges (20 THB) usually apply only when traveling very far, such as deep into Jomtien.

❸ You Must Signal to Get On and Off

To get on, simply raise your hand when the truck approaches. To get off, press the buzzer on the ceiling or pillars inside. Keep an eye on Google Maps and press it just before your destination!

❹ When Does a Songthaew Become a Private Taxi?

If you ask a driver to go to a specific destination outside their normal route, the ride becomes a private taxi trip. The 15 THB rule no longer applies, and you must negotiate the price before getting in. This is not a scam — it’s just a different usage style.

🎒 Tips to Avoid Getting Lost

Remember the basic routes: Beach Road goes south, and Second Road goes north.

If you feel like you’ve taken the wrong turn, don’t panic—just hop off and find a different route.

When in doubt, confirm with the driver by asking simple words like “Naklua?” or “Jomtien?” before boarding.

Google Maps is your best friend—track your location in real-time to see where you are.

💰 When Does the Standard Fare Apply?

The standard 15 THB fare applies only when riding along the normal shared routes.

If you ask a driver to deviate from their regular path or take you directly to a specific destination, the songthaew becomes a private taxi charter, and you will need to negotiate a much higher price before boarding.

To keep it simple and ensure the standard rate, just do what the locals do: hop on, enjoy the shared ride, press the buzzer when you want to stop, and pay the driver when you get off.

📖 Pattaya Songthaew Routes & How to Ride

Pattaya’s songthaew network is built around four main routes, covering most of the places visitors travel.

Each route follows a simple path, and once you understand the basics, getting around the city becomes easy and inexpensive.

Overview of Pattaya’s four main songthaew routes (Verified June 2026).
Let’s start with the Beach Road Route, the most popular route for first-time visitors.

① Beach Road Route

This is Pattaya’s most popular and frequently used songthaew route.
It follows Beach Road and Second Road, connecting many of Pattaya’s most popular attractions, shopping areas, and hotels.

Songthaews travel south along Beach Road and north along Second Road, following Pattaya’s one-way traffic system.

A single songthaew may not complete the entire route.
Next, let’s take a look at the Naklua Route.

② Naklua Route

The Naklua Route connects central Pattaya with Naklua, a quieter local neighborhood known for fresh seafood markets, temples, and a more relaxed atmosphere.

Unlike the Beach Road Route, songthaews travel in both directions along Pattaya–Naklua Road. Southbound vehicles briefly detour near Dolphin Circle before continuing toward central Pattaya.

When heading back toward central Pattaya, the vehicle briefly turns onto North Pattaya Road before making a U-turn and continuing to Beach Road. This is normal, so don’t worry if it seems to head the wrong way for a moment.

Like other routes,
drivers sometimes leave the route or stop at a stand before reaching the end.
If that happens, simply pay the fare and board the next passing songthaew.

Finally, let’s explore the last core line in the network: the Soi Buakhao Route.

④ Soi Buakhao Route

The Soi Buakhao Route connects Central Pattaya Road (Pattaya Klang) and South Pattaya Road (Pattaya Tai). It passes through one of Pattaya’s liveliest local neighborhoods, including Tree Town, local markets, bars, and many budget-friendly hotels.

Unlike the Beach Road Route, songthaews on Soi Buakhao operate in both directions. Simply wait on the side of the road that matches the direction you want to travel.

Just like with the other routes, a single songthaew may not complete the entire journey from end to end. If your driver turns off early or stops at a route stand (such as the market area on the South Pattaya side), simply hop off, pay the standard fare, and catch the next one heading your way.

Why We Recommend It

Direct to DMK:No transfer required.

Comfortable Coach: Air-conditioned buses with onboard toilets make the journey more convenient.

Budget-Friendly: One of the cheapest direct options between Pattaya and Don Mueang Airport.

Pro-Tips & Important Notes

Not a Main Terminal: In Pattaya, this bus does not leave from the North Pattaya or Jomtien terminals. It departs from a roadside stop on Sukhumvit Road. Make sure to check the exact location on Google Maps before you go!

New Route Alert: This service is relatively new, so schedules and fares can be a bit flexible. Arrive early and confirm the latest departure times at the stop.

Power Outlets (Hit or Miss): Some buses feature standard electrical outlets near the seats, though availability and power can vary. On one of my trips, the outlets weren’t active until I asked the driver to turn on the master switch.
Since connections can sometimes be loose or specific seats might not work, consider a working outlet a nice bonus for your journey, and it’s always a good idea to keep a power bank handy!

The Comfort Choice: Book Bell Travel Service if you want hotel pickup and a stress-free experience (just remember to book in advance!).

No matter which one you choose, give yourself plenty of time, keep some small change handy, and enjoy the scenic ride out of the city.

Wishing you a safe and smooth flight home!

Departure Day Checklist

✅ Prepare cash: Have some small Thai Baht notes and coins ready for transport and toilets.

✅ Leave early: Aim to depart 4–5 hours before your flight, especially during rush hour or local events.

✅ Keep luggage tags: Don’t lose the tag the driver gives you when loading your suitcase!

✅ Double-check terminal location: Remember, the “Pink Bus” isn’t at the main terminal—it’s on Sukhumvit Road.

Cost: from around 150 baht one way.

Speedboats are a good option if you want to save time or prefer a more direct ride.
They’re commonly used by couples, small groups, or travelers with a tight schedule.

That said, the ride can be quite bumpy, especially on windy days.
If you’re sensitive to motion or simply prefer a calmer journey, the ferry may feel more comfortable.
When booking, it’s also important to confirm the exact drop-off point on Koh Larn.

🛳 From My Own Experience: Why I Prefer the Ferry

I’ve taken the ferry from Pattaya to Koh Larn several times,
and the routes, piers, and timing described in this guide are based on what worked most smoothly during those trips.

Personally, I prefer the ferry.
The ride takes about 40 minutes, but I actually enjoy that time.
Sitting with travelers from many different countries, watching the sea, and occasionally chatting with people makes the journey feel like part of the experience, not just transportation.

The ferry gets pretty full, but safety first—everyone’s got their orange life jackets on.

The ferry also feels more relaxed and steady to me.
Speedboats are faster and more thrilling, but I personally value a calmer pace and a laid-back ride.
And of course, the price matters too.
At such a low price, the ferry is by far the most affordable way to reach Koh Larn.
For me, the ferry isn’t just the cheapest option — it’s the most enjoyable way to get there.

📍 Choosing the Right Arrival Pier

Koh Larn overview map: Showing the two main ferry arrival piers (Na Baan and Tawaen) and the locations of the major beaches.

Your arrival pier on Koh Larn plays a big role in how smoothly your day trip goes.
It affects transportation options, crowd levels, and how quickly you can reach your first beach.

There are two main arrival piers for ferries from Pattaya.

🚢 Na Baan Pier (Main Pier)

Na Baan Pier is the island’s main transportation hub.

Largest pier with small shops, food stalls, and restrooms.

Songthaews and motorbike taxis are always available nearby.

Best option if you plan to visit multiple beaches in one day.

Easy to adjust your plan if the weather or crowds change.

This pier gives you the most flexibility and is ideal for travelers who want to explore more than one area of the island.

🏖 Tawaen Beach Pier (Beachfront Access)

Tawaen Beach Pier drops you directly at Koh Larn’s most popular beach.

Step off the ferry straight onto Tawaen Beach.

Very convenient if you want an easy, no-planning beach day.

Plenty of beach chairs, restaurants, and activities nearby.

Can get crowded during late mornings and peak seasons.

This pier is perfect if Tawaen Beach is your main destination and you don’t plan to move around much.

👉 Which Pier Should You Choose?

If you already know which beach you want to visit, choosing the nearest pier makes sense.
However, if you’re unsure or want flexibility, Na Baan Pier is the safest and most versatile choice.

It allows you to decide your route after arrival and makes island transportation much easier—especially for first-time visitors.

🚐 How to Get Around Koh Larn

Getting around Koh Larn is simple once you know your options.
For first-time visitors, the songthaew is the easiest and most reliable way to travel between beaches.

That said, there are a few different transport options available on the island,
depending on your travel style and confidence level.
Below are the main ways to get around Koh Larn.

Songthaew (shared pickup truck) – the most common and beginner-friendly option.

Motorbike taxis – quick rides available near piers and busy beaches.

Rental motorbikes – suitable only for confident and experienced riders.

Fixed Routes: Unlike Pattaya’s circular street loops, island songthaews run strictly point-to-point between the main piers and specific beaches.

Don’t Worry, It’s Easy: At the pick-up points, you’ll easily spot drivers and staff wearing bright blue shirts. Just tell them the beach name you want to go to, and they will gladly guide you to the right truck.

Fare & Rates: Fares are usually fixed around 30 to 40 THB per person depending on the destination. Since rates are based on current standards and subject to change, it’s always a good idea to confirm the price with the staff in blue shirts before boarding!

Tien Beach is famous for its beautiful white sand and clear water, and it’s a spot you definitely shouldn’t miss. The good news is that you don’t have to worry about getting stranded here, as it has its own dedicated songthaew pick-up point.

Local Tip: Tien Beach is located right next to Samae Beach. While songthaews are usually waiting here throughout the day, they can become less frequent after 4:00 PM.
